Published by gestalten: the book presents an informative and inspiring overview on the contemporary practice of urban agriculture around the world. From a scholar that quit academia to fight to save Mexico City’s chinampas to a passionate activist tackling food insecurity by teaching urban farming skills in Nairobi, included are a mix of in-depth case studies, profiles on leaders in urban agriculture, special features, guest essays by experts in the field, a glossary, and step-by-step activities in case you are inspired to get involved yourself.
Starting with my work and my interest in photographing urban agriculture globally, I am forever grateful to the editors at gestalten, Robert Klanten and Andrea Servert, who gave me the chance to co-edit and create a book from that idea, together with the contributions and hard work of so many talented people.

Thank you to all the farmers, growers, activists, food justice advocates, chefs, educators, beekeepers and all the others who made the time and wanted to be part of this book. I hope it will be enjoyed.
With everything that has happened and is still happening in the world today, I’m so grateful to have had this project to work on during a very difficult year, it reminded me of the value of both life and farming.
